Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
