Government Official Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This wider security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in all areas of government activities, including transport use to communication practices.
