Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
