Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
